If python 3.x (tested 3.[56]) is used for the client, output files are slaughtered.

And indeed:

I have a strong, strong feeling that it's python's fault:
xxd -ps -c1 /tmp/cado.agcc96la/c30.upload/c30.51000-52000.sf20myrd.gz | sort | uniq -c | wc -l
255
Namely: all bytes are present with a uniform probability, except 0d which is just never there.
Note: on this machine, python 3.6 is used for both the client and the server.
