WIP: Resolve "No active pane on login and signup templates"

Edit: I commit two unrelated commits on this branch and I don't know how to delete them. I should probably create a new branch for it.

This fixes the bug related to the active pane. This is a small hook. It shows that some parts of the code are duplicated across both templates and should be refactored at some point.
